Got questions about Therapeutic Art?

The following Qs might help

Where are you located?

I am in London, Ontario, at 39 Vauxhall Street.

Do you do virtual sessions?

Yes, I do! You will need to have your own art supplies for these, and I’m happy to send along a list of suggested supplies at various price ranges. Art supplies don’t have to cost an arm and a leg!

What hours are you open?

Mondays 9:00am - 11:00am and 1:00pm - 9:30pm

Tuesdays 11:30am - 9:30pm

Wednesdays 12:30pm - 9:30pm

Thursdays 9:00am - 9:30pm

Fridays 9:00am - 5:30pm

Saturdays 9:00am - 1:00pm

How do I set up the first appointment with you?

You can either call me at 226-700-1149, or email me at hailey@haileytallmanart.com or book a free 30 minute consultation call here. (link: https://tidycal.com/haileytallmanart/30-minute-consultation.)

How many sessions will I need?

For Therapeutic Art I recommend at least 6 in order to get a good sense of where you are at currently and to have time to complete some therapeutic exercises together and reach at least one of your goals. For Creativity Coaching it's 2 sessions a month for 3 months (See "Work with me" for details!)

What’s your cancellation policy?

I ask that, if at all possible, you give me 24 hours prior notice if you need to cancel or change the time of an appointment.

If I don't hear from you within this time frame I will need to charge you $50 for the missed session.

I will make exceptions for reasonable excuses (eg. emergency, illness) but I think we can agree that "I forgot" is not a fair excuse, right?

What is Art Therapy?

Art Therapy employs art and other creative modalities to support an individual’s goals within a therapeutic relationship - that's what you and I will be building together :)

Art Therapists endorse the idea that the process of making art is inherently therapeutic and takes into consideration thoughts, feelings, behaviours, and spirituality within the counselling process.

Art Therapy helps explore issues of relationships, family, loss, life transitions, abuse, and development (information taken from the Ontario Art Therapy Association https://oata.ca/).

Who is a candidate for art therapy?

Art therapy is for anyone of any age and any level of artistic skill! However, I work with specific people - see the next FAQ!

Who are your clients?

I work with adults with she/her or she/they pronouns* who seek to do the following: dive deeper into self-discovery, gain new perspectives on their struggles, rebuild their self-acceptance and silence their inner critic, go beyond talk therapy to what words alone cannot express, connect with their inner voice and knowledge, and self-actualize and realize their higher purpose.

*all cis and trans women as well as non-binary people who are comfortable in a space that centres the experiences of women and people who have lived experience of misogyny.

What groups and organizations are clients?

I work with groups and organizations that want to build and enhance the camaraderie and connection between their team members, believe in healthy collaboration and teamwork, and want to foster a healthy and empowering work environment and culture.

What modalities do you use? (i.e., do I have to do visual art with you?)

I have training primarily in visual art therapy. AND I have taken extensive training and courses in drama therapy, including a method called “The Story Within” that incorporates myths and fairytales. I am also a musician and have percussion instruments in my studio. So, the answer is that you use the tools that best help you express your inner world.

Having said this, I’ve also trained in talk therapy. In some sessions, we might only talk if that’s what feels right. The art/drama/music materials are always there to supplement what you express through words.

I also have training in attachment theory, solution-focused brief therapy, and women’s empowerment coaching, so I use various combinations of these approaches in our sessions.

What are your training and experience?

I have a Master’s in Creative Arts Therapies from Concordia University and a Bachelor’s of Fine Arts from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design.

I am a professional member of the Canadian Art Therapy Association and follow their code of ethics.

I am in the process of applying for registration with the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario.

I have been leading therapeutic art workshops since 2007 and have interned and worked as an art therapist since 2013. I have worked extensively with the following populations: refugees and immigrants to Canada; people with Alzheimer’s and Dementia; children and families in crisis; survivors of gender-based violence; people of all ages suffering from anxiety and depression; people with PTSD and C-PTSD.

What if I’m not good at art?

Are you drawn to art? Curious about its healing properties? Do you enjoy using art materials? Then that’s all you need to do art therapy! Unlike art class, we focus more on the process of art-making and the message found in the product than the product itself.

What do you think about racism?

I think racism is a serious, worldwide problem that affects us all. There are racists and anti-racists, but there are no non-racists, so I am always learning how to be a better anti-racist and seeking to uncover how white supremacy affects my worldview. I aim to be a supportive ally and accomplice to my Black, Indigenous, and racialized clients.

Are you trauma and violence-informed in your practice?

I have taken many courses and workshops on the impacts of trauma and how to heal it. I strive to be trauma- and violence-informed in my practice. If you have suffered any trauma you are aware of, please let me know so I can be more sensitive to your needs and experience.
